Meet the designers: Paco Rabanne and Jacques Fonteray

Paco Rabanne and Jacques Fonteray created the sensational outfits for the film Barbarella. Based on the character by Jean-Claude Forest, the slinky and form fitting costume of Barbarella and The Black Queen are in keeping with Forest's style and sensibility.

Filmed in 1968, the couture of 40,000 A.D has many fashion elements of 60's(capes, mini skirts, go-go boots). The designers in the film, Paco Rabanne in particular, strove to represent the defiant, experimental styles of the era.

Paco Rabanne work in the film is evident given the extensive use of such materials as metals(chain mail) and plastic in both clothes and jewelry. Here are some of his past desins,

and recent workTrue to his use of metal in his creations, the dress is made of rusted chain mail. To learn more about him read his wikipedia entry

I'm still looking for more of Jacques Fonteray's work and hope to post showing how he contributed to the style and look of the film.
